Die-Cast Club Blog - Why I Got Into Model Building?
George Collazo, Editor at www.modelkitsreview.com
The 1:8 scale Back to the Future DeLorean is an incredibly detailed, exquisitely designed Die-Cast model offered as a subscription kit exclusively from Die-Cast Club. It also happens to be one of the best kits with which to start a deep and fulfilling relationship with the hobby of model building and collecting.
As soon as you get your hands on the initial issues, it’s not hard to envision a ride as fun and exciting as the movie itself. In fact, that’s what this hobby is really all about - and, in my opinion, there’s no better way to discover that for yourself than with this large, impressive 1:8 scale beauty.
Oftentimes, you may encounter a friend or associate who’ll bemoan “I wish I had the time you seem to have for a hobby like this.” Well, quite honestly, the time is always there. But it helps to have a subject that sparks a desire to start and stick with it. Before you know it, you’ll find yourself happily working extra hours – the time you may have thought you didn't have – planning, building, collecting and adding personal touches to your close to finished creations.
One of the other reasons that beginner builders cite as a roadblock is their own notion that they lack the technical skills to build a model. Not true! Manufacturers offer a wide range of model kits suitable for a range of different skill levels. Many of these kits feature Skill Level numbers printed on their packaging, from Level 1 (snap-on, pre-painted, no cement required) to Level 5 (multi-parts and multi-media kits aimed at the more experienced modelers).
As long as you’re able to follow step-by-step instructions, you can start right off the bat with Level 2 and 3 models. And you’ll hardly be alone in your endeavors. One of the nicest perks that accompanies the hobby is the network of friends you’ll make along the way – from general model kit enthusiasts to fans of whatever subject your kit is all about. There are lots and lots of Back to the Future and DeLorean fans out there – and now you’ve got something in common with all of them.
Through my model building communities, I’ve made friends with hobbyists from Sao Paulo to the Czech Republic. If ever I were to visit them, I know I could count on them for a ride from the airport.
But chances are that there are model building clubs closer to home – people in your community you’ll get to know and come to count on as you gain more experience. But you’ll never meet them if you don’t take the first step and start building.
So, what are you waiting for?
