MARVEL'S ‘PHASE WONG’ HAS BEGUN

Benedict Wong has once again talked about the next era for the MCU, as well as his place within it.

In Spider-Man: No Way Home, it was revealed that Doctor Strange’s assistant Wong had become Sorcerer Supreme while the powerful wizard had been blipped away for five years, letting us know that he was now one of the most important figures in the Marvel Universe.

This revelation followed an appearance in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, where we also found out that the surly Master of the Mystic Arts has not only been helping Hulk villain Abomination to rehabilitate and channel his rage but that he has been recruiting a new group of heroes to defend the Earth from threats as well.

This puts him squarely into the same sort of role that Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) played in The Infinity Saga MCU films, and may even make him the man to ultimately gather together the next iteration of The Avengers before too long.

In an interview with Empire magazine for their May 2022 issue, the actor explained that Wong’s new importance has made his character more prominent than ever, saying: "I call it Phase Wong. It's a nice, interesting shift. Wong has taken on a new role, and that dynamic changes between them both."

This isn’t the first time that he has talked about Wong’s ongoing and forever expanding role in Marvel’s films either, as back in December, the actor said to Marvel.com on the red carpet for Spider-Man: No Way Home that he “got an email from Kevin Feige saying it's fast becoming the WCU."

Doctor Strange doesn’t seem to really mind, however, with actor Benedict Cumberbatch telling KCRW"You can't be a superhero in isolation. They have to interact with people. Good, bad, or indifferent … and whatever the outcomes are, there has to be an exchange. I think there is a buddy thing going on with Wong, for sure. That's the sort of odd-couple relationship akin to Watson and Sherlock.”

If you like Wong, you can see more of him in Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, which comes to US theaters on May 6, 2022
