Amazon Prime have offered Tolkien fans a first glimpse at their epic series of The Lord of the Rings, which is coming to the streaming service, and revealed the premiere date.

With very little in terms of detail after a lengthy production, they've finally dropped the first image – and it looks as spectacular as the budget - with a gorgeous landscape view of what appears to be Rivendell but there's no confirmation where exactly it is or, more importantly, who this white-cloaked figure is in the centre of the shot.

They captioned the image: 'On September 2, 2022, a new journey begins.' So at least we know there's only a month to wait until we can binge-watch one of the most talked-about productions in recent years.

As fans will know, Prime's LotR series is the most expensive in history, costing a whopping $465 million (£335 million), which is a huge investment. Compare this to reports that season six of Game of Thrones cost around $100 million (£72 million), it certainly displays ambition and intent, putting its incredible budget into perspective.

The sole, undetailed image has had over 52,000 retweets and 145,000 Likes, which implies a lot of people are interested in the upcoming series based on the J.R.R.Tolkien trilogy of books published in 1954 and the multi-Oscar-winning movies adapted between 2001 and 2003.

Interestingly, the view looked decidedly similar in aesthetic to this stunning shot from Peter Jackson's trilogy...

As we said, while there's huge buzz around the new-look LotR, relatively little is known about it, so let's hope they begin to release snippets over the coming weeks - not that we need any encouragement to tune in!

The Lord of the RIngs will debut exclusively on Amazon Prime from September 2.
